Nowadays, many care-and-support housing complexes are renovated or demolished and replaced by new buildings in order to meet the standards currently applicable. Commissioning parties are usually housing corporations, management foundations and healthcare providers. The new buildings have often an open look, are light and spacious, furnished with state-of-the-art facilities and increasingly embedded in the community. That is why the layout of the environment of the building is so important. Awareness of what happens in the outdoor world should be best possible, so that the social climate in the home is outdoor-oriented. Safety and accessibility are important priority areas, too.

Design requirements are usually contained in a schedule of requirements and implemented by a building team, leading to a design which takes into consideration future management.
